Fruit of the Spirit: GENTLENESS

Let your gentleness be evident to all.
The Lord is near.
Philippians 4:5

I remember when Peyton was a baby, we had to remind Cam to be gentle with her over and over again. At the time, he didn't understand that he had to temper his strength because he was much stronger than a newborn. As kids mature, they (generally) remember to be careful of their physical strength when interacting with a much younger child. We then need to teach them gentleness in character - being kind, tender, calm and compassionate to others. Being a gentle person is a choice, rooted in strength.

Jesus is our best example of this. Even though Jesus is all powerful, he came to earth humbly and quietly in a manager. His interactions with people were gentle (but firm!). Even though Jesus was the perfect, sinless son of God, he talked to people with compassion and grace. He even called himself the Good Shepherd (John 10:11). A good shepherd of sheep will protect, guide and nurture his flock. Jesus demonstrated that his whole life, even to the point of laying down his life for his sheep.

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms,
holding them close to his heart.
He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.
Isaiah 40:11, NLT

This week, as you talk about gentleness with your kids - try to come up with examples of how Jesus was gentle in his action and responses. Check out the ResKids Gazette for more ideas, and activities!
