Trusting God Even When Our Plans Change

I believe all of us will agree that 2020 has been a year that none of us could have planned or foreseen. Many of us probably had plans like trips, events, or activities during the year that had to be cancelled or changed. As for Resonance Church, we had established a budget at the beginning of 2020 that outlined our plans for the year. Some of those plans included moving to our new location at Trinity Western University (Richmond), short-term missions trip (India), annual church retreat (the Firs), and other events like Christmas and special luncheons. Naturally, we feel disappointed and even frustrated that our plans were cancelled by a global pandemic that swept the world and instantly changed so much of our daily lives.

However, I want to encourage you – we can take comfort in knowing that God knows and holds the future. He has the answers. He is not surprised by any of this. Our plans may have changed in unexpected ways, but God does not change. Hebrews 13:8 declares that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." The world keeps changing, but Jesus stays the same. As we look around at our world and see all of the sudden and drastic changes that are happening, we take comfort in knowing that Jesus stays the same!

We can choose to trust God even when life isn’t going as we have planned. We can trust that there is a greater plan than anything we could orchestrate or predict, and believe that His plan for us is good. We have to exchange our plans for His plans and remember that in all things there is a purpose.

Proverbs 16:9 says, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” I can plan all I want, but God may have other plans. He determines the steps, so we need to live with an open heart and mind, and we need to learn to be flexible and deal with disappointments even when we can’t see His purpose or His glory (yet). God has a plan for how this year and all the future years will become. All we need to do is to trust Him with it, and He will see us through in our journey together.
